Chicago as a major center for Blacks in technology

Last update: Wednesday 3/2/16
Previous notes on this blog hailed New York NY, Washington DC, Atlanta GA, and Oakland CA as major centers for Blacks in technology, i.e., as urban communities wherein Black Americans could find significant opportunities for success within an economy increasingly driven by innovations in information technology. So why has it taken so long for this blog to "discover" Chicago IL, the nation's third most populous city?

Social media, like Twitter, enable all of us to participate in the curation of what happened in our lives to an extent that was reserved for professional historians in previous times.

Black Self-segregation in Politics and Academia -- Part 3 (strategic partnerships)

Last update: Saturday 12/515
In Part 2 of these notes, I suggested that most Black students are underperforming at most predominantly white institutions (PWIs), not just because they endure racist micro aggressions, but because they must strive for academic success without the benefit of the pervasive support networks of peers, teachers, tutors, mentors, and role models that sustain Black students at HBCUs.

Black Self-segregation in Politics and Academia -- Part 2 (higher ed)

Last update: Friday 11/27/15
II. Black higher education needs Black institutions
Nowadays over ninety percent of Black college students are enrolled in non-HBCUs, or Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) as some people call them. The Black Lives Matter movement has recently engaged in numerous protests on non-HBCU campuses against the persistence of racism at these institutions, mostly in the form of micro aggressions. In my opinion most of these protests have missed the mark.

DLL Storify of UNCF's Third Annual HBCU Innovation Summit in Silicon Valley -- Day 4 of 4, Saturday 11/21/15

Last update: Saturday 11/21/15
From Wednesday 11/18/15 until Saturday 11/21/15, UNCF is hosting its third annual HBCU Innovation summit in Silicon Valley. As per the summit's press release:

Where Did They Get Their Numbers???

Last update: Saturday 11/21/15
I have been dismayed by the fallacious "pipeline" explanations offered by the Silicon Valley corporate elite that there aren't enough Black students majoring in Computer Science to enable them to employ racially diversified technical staffs. More recently, however, I have also been dismayed by fallacious declarations from some Black academic leaders that it's possible to diversify the faculty of all colleges and universities to a level close to 12 percent because Black Americans are 12 percent of the total U.S. population. So I find myself shaking my head at both elites and wondering, "Where did they get their numbers?"
